The Accuracy of Incident Vertebral Fracture Detection in Children Using Targeted Case‐Finding Approaches

Vertebral fractures are clinically important sequelae of a wide array of pediatric diseases. The study examined the accuracy of case-finding strategies for detecting incident vertebral fractures (IVF) in children with leukemia, rheumatic disorders, or nephrotic syndrome.

Molecular Mechanisms of Diaphragm Myopathy in Humans With Severe Heart Failure

Diaphragm weakness impairs quality of life, exercise capacity, and survival in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. Diaphragm weakness in CHF was associated with intracellular abnormalities. In vitro, respiratory muscle function and diaphragm thickness were reduced by 38% and 23%. Mitochondria showed accumulation of small mitochondria and inhibited autophagy/mitophagy. We speculate this offers a novel therapeutic molecular.

Eruptions and related clinical course among 296 hospitalized adults with confirmed COVID-19

Among 296 hospitalized adults with COVID-19, 35 (11.8%) had at least 1 disease-related eruption. Patients with the mucocutaneous disease were more likely to use mechanical ventilation and to use vasopressors.

Maintenance Treatment With Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics for People With Nonaffective Psychoses: A Network Meta-Analysis

The study compared relapse prevention and acceptability of long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics in the maintenance treatment of adults with nonaffective psychoses. Of 86 eligible trials, 78 (N=11,505) were included in the meta-analysis.

In Vivo Corneal Confocal Microscopy in Mucolipidosis Type IV

A 7-year-old girl referred for a progressive bilateral visual impairment was found with a diffuse epithelial corneal infiltration appearing as small translucent vesicles. Confocal microscopy showed hyperreflectivity of the cytoplasm, making the nuclei more visible than in normal eyes. Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of mucolipidosis type IV.

The other face of advanced paternal age: a scoping review of its terminological, social, public health, psychological, ethical and regulatory aspects

There is a global tendency for parents to conceive children later in life. The review suggests promising avenues of research such as introducing the voice of fathers of advanced age into the research agenda. Results show that the field of APA is still in the making and that evidence is lacking to fully address the issues of APA.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of obesity and COVID-19 outcomes

Some studies report that obesity is associated with more severe symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection and worse COVID-19 outcomes. It is uncertain whether obesity is in fact associated with worse outcomes compared to non-obese individuals.

Safety and efficacy of riluzole in patients undergoing decompressive surgery for degenerative cervical myelopathy (CSM-Protect): a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised, phase 3 trial

Degenerative cervical myelopathy is the most common form of non-traumatic spinal cord injury. This multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, phase 3 trial was done at 16 university-affiliated centers. There was no difference between the riluzole and placebo groups in the primary endpoint of change in mJOA score at 6-month follow-up.
