Perceived Access to Handguns Among Colorado High School Students
Access to firearms among youth can increase the risk of suicide or other injuries. The 2019 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey was an anonymous survey administered to high school students in Colorado. One in 5 students said it was "sort of easy" or "very easy" (8.8%) to access a handgun. This highlights the need for efforts to address ways to reduce firearm access for youth, including secure storage at home, for the prevention of youth firearm suicide and other firearm injuries.
Pregnancy and Neonatal Outcomes After Fetal Exposure to Biologics and Thiopurines Among Women With Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Pregnant women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may require biological or thiopurine therapy to control disease activity. Drug exposure did not increase the rate of congenital malformations, spontaneous abortions, preterm birth, low birth weight, or infections during the first year of life. Higher disease activity was associated with a higher risk of spontaneous abortion.
Longitudinal Changes in Fecal Calprotectin Levels Among Pregnant Women With and Without Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Their Babies
The effect of pregnancy on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains poorly understood. fecal calprotectin (FC) levels were measured at each trimester of pregnancy and in babies throughout the first 3 years of life. FC levels were correlated with the bacterial abundance in both mothers and babies. Pregnancy is associated with decreased inflammatory activity in mothers with IBD.
Hypertension
Elevated cardiovascular risk including stroke, heart failure, and heart attack is present even after normalization of blood pressure in patients with hypertension. Underlying immune cell activation is a likely culprit. Triggers that may initiate immune activation include viral infections, autoimmunity, and lifestyle factors such as excess dietary salt.
Hypertension and Prohypertensive Antineoplastic Therapies in Cancer Patients
Systemic hypertension is the most common comorbidity among cancer patients. Cancer and hypertension have common risk factors, have overlapping pathophysiological mechanisms and hypertension may also be a risk factor for some tumor types. Monitoring and management of hypertension before, during, and after cancer treatment can be improved to minimize cardiovascular risks.
Evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 in Tears of Patients with Moderate to Severe COVID-19
To investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in tears of patients with moderate to severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Tears were collected within 48 hours of laboratory confirmation using 3 methods. Samples from both eyes of each patient were transported in a single viral transport media for real-time RT-PCR. Results were found in 75 patients.SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in tears of 24% of patients with moderate to severe COVID-19. The median value of symptomatology in patients with pos
